Why does alcohol dry out skin?

Alcohol can dissolve and break down skin oils that retain moisture by preventing evaporation.

Although it's important to remember that this only applies to ethanol alcohol. Cetyl alcohol, the kind you find in moisturizer, will not dry out your skin.
