Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965, by three members of the Nation of Islam, a religious organization from which he had recently distanced himself. The men were identified as Talmadge Hayer, Norman 3X Butler, and Thomas 15X Johnson. Hayer confessed to the murder, while Butler and Johnson maintained their innocence. The assassination was rooted in tensions and conflicts within the Nation of Islam and Malcolm X's evolving political views.
