Elemental oxygen is a gas at ordinary temperatures (around 300K). Water is about 90% oxygen by mass, but it's a liquid at the same temperature. Nearly all metal oxides are solids at that temperature. The physical state of an element at a given temperature has almost no relationship to the physical state of compounds containing that element at the same temperature.
