What does the term platform mean in the context of the political process?

Before major elections, a political party often holds a convention to nominate candidates and set forth to the public the party's policies on issues of importance. This is called the party "platform" and there is an understanding that candidates it nominates for public office agree with the platform and are obligated, if possible, to pursue these policies if elected.
