How do you get a phone unlocked?

Take it to the carrier store (AT&T store, Verizon store, etc.) and ask them to unlock it for you. If you are trying to unlock a phone that does not support gsm service (most Verizon and sprint phones don't, the obvious exceptions being the blackberry bold and storm) than you will be unable to activate it on another network.
