In the UK there are tight safety regualtions as to the protective gear a motorcyclist should wear whilst on a public highway. This gear does mean that the majority of accidents result in minor injuries.

But, when large speeds are involved or head collisions regretfully motor bike accidents can be very serious and can cause fatalities. As a percentage of the number of overall motorcycle accidents the fatality ratio is low, but compared to the percentage fatalities in car accidents it is comparatively high.
