The person who ran the 22 miles to report victory to Athens was Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. After the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, he is said to have sprinted from the battlefield to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the Persians. According to legend, he collapsed and died after delivering the message, which is why the modern marathon race is approximately 26.2 miles long.
