In 1606, King James I of England granted a proprietary charter of land to two branches of the Virginia Company to establish colonies in the Americas.
The Plymouth Colony was permitted to establish a 100 square mile colony between Chesapeake Bay and the modern United States-Canadian border, between the 38th and 45th parallel. Their colony at Popham failed. The London Company was permitted to establish their colony between Cape Fear and Long Island Sound between the 34th and 41st parallel. Their colony was Jamestown. Under the charter's terms, they could not establish colonies within 100 miles of reach other.
