In Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', the children under the spirit's robe are Ignorance and Want. Ignorace is the boy and Want is the girl. The spirit warns Scrooge to beware them both, but especially the boy because on his head is written 'doom'. The children are representations of the negative side of society; that often we choose to ignore those less fortunate than ourselves and are only out for our own benefit. The spirit was teaching Scrooge to be more giving of his time and money to others.
