Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, was burned by Sherman's army during the Civil War. In February 1865, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered the city to be set ablaze as part of his campaign of total war. The destruction aimed to undermine the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. Much of the city was left in ruins following the fire.
