The moon is the only natural satellite the Earth has. The Moon has a formal name and is known as La Luna. A natural satellite is something orbiting another body, that is not man-made. There are many man-made satellites orbiting the Earth, but the moon is the only natural satellite. The Moon itself has no known natural satellites. Many of the other planets of our solar system have more than one moon and so have many natural satellites.
The Moon, orbits at an average distance of 234,000 miles (376,000 km). The Moon has a diameter of about 2100 miles (3400 km), about one-fourth that of Earth. It is the fifth-largest moon in the solar system.
