What percentage of a tree can you cut out without killing it?

The amount that a tree can tolerate having removed at once varies depending on the species and the condition of the tree. Some trees can be cut down completely, and then re-sprout from their roots! The general rule however, is to never remove more than one quarter of the canopy.
