Butterworts (genus Pinguicula) have adapted to nutrient-poor environments by developing specialized sticky leaves that trap and digest small insects. This carnivorous mechanism allows them to supplement their nutrient intake, particularly nitrogen, which is scarce in their native habitats. Their leaves are often glandular, secreting a glue-like substance to capture prey, and they can also photosynthesize, enabling them to thrive in challenging conditions. These adaptations help them survive in bogs and other wetland areas where traditional soil nutrients are minimal.
