In the New Testament book of Acts chapter 9 it tells of Saul's conversion to Paul and his becoming an apostle.

He was a Jewish leader that was very devout in his beliefs. He would go around and have Christians put in jail or put to death, such as the case with Stephen.

While traveling to Damascus he was stopped by a blinding light and a loud voice which was Jesus. Jesus asked him why he was persecuting him by attaching the Christians. Paul was left blind and went into Damascus where Jesus had arranged for Ananias to heal him of his blindness. Paul then believed that Jesus was the messiah and from then on he preached the good Word.
