When Ismarus (where a race called the Cicones lived) was sacked, Maron (a priest of Apollo) was spared, and in return he gave Odysseus and his men 12 jars of his finest wine. This was the wine subsequently used to fuddle the Cyclops, Polyphemus', wits and ensure that Odysseus and his men could blind the Cyclops and escape out of his cave. Read about it in The Odyssey Book IX. Maron was also known for being the charioteer of Dionysus (the Greek god of wine) so it can be assumed that the 12 jugs of his best wine are the twelve best jugs of wine in the world.
