What is Mercanticism?

Mercantilism was an economic theory that dominated European economic policies in the 16th to 18th centuries. It promoted government intervention in the economy to increase national wealth through a favorable balance of trade, accumulation of gold and silver, and development of colonies. Mercantilist policies included tariffs, subsidies, and colonial expansion to achieve these goals.
