Why has an outhouse got a moon carved in it?

Those outhouses were around before electricity, so you would have needed some sort of lighting in there.

For privacy reasons they placed a window above the line of sight, and made it a quarter moon for decorative purposes.

This allowed to let in just enough light to '' take care of business'
