The American Revolution is very important for us to learn about, because then we can all know not only who won and lost, but why they won or lost. Why was it unfair to tax the colonies? Why were the taxes levied on the colonists in the first place? These were things that need to be known.
A short time after the Revolution started, the Declaration of
Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. In it, he made it clear
why the colonies wanted independence. Jefferson drew on ideas of Locke
and other Enlightenment thinkers. He asserted that people had a number
of natural rights, such as "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The
American Revolution was important to people around the world, because it
represented a fight for freedom, and because Americans carried out
Enlightenment ideas.
