What was education like in the 16th century?

Very few people were educated. Only the nobility had access to education and that usually was from a priest. The common man or woman couldn’t read or write. This is one reason that there are stain glass Windows in churches because they told The Bible stories and why people give “testimony “ in court. They couldn’t read or even write their name and unless someone or something happened when they were born they didn’t know when their birthday was.
