This is a difficult time for you both. To begin with, make sure you spend time with your son outside of the school issues. Make an appointment to visit with all of the teachers he has to try to narrow down the problems he is having. No matter how far along in school he is, there may be some skill he needs that is holding him back. Make a plan and ask the teachers to work with you on this. You may request additional testing. On the personal side, verify with your doctor that he is not depressed. Make sure his day starts well--no yelling, no people on the bus bullying him and so on. With these facts in hand, you can insist upon habits that will help school work improve: writing down assignments, getting enough sleep, exercise, and good food. Remove access to the computer, phone and TV at night. You may need to consider moving him to another school if he is already upset so early in the school year.
