'am' are the initials of the Latin phrase 'ante merdian'. Translated in to modern English ' ante meridian' means 'before noon'.

Similarly 'pm' ; ' post merdian' ; after noon.

The 'am' period extends from midnight to midday. So yes!!! it can encompass part of the night.
