When did the fashion world take off?

Around WWI when all the men were away at war and the women started experiencing more freedom because they started doing the work that the men would do around the house. That is when the different styles started showing up. Mostly though fashion has been around forever especially in the early 1700's and 1800's fashion was very important to people it was just different from what it is today.
