Generally speaking, pioneers were essentially farmers. They had typical farm animals found on the country side like cattle, sheep, chickens, goats, pigs, etc... Additionally, they had work horses and Clydesdale horses to pull farming equipment which were necessary for planting and harvesting. They also had a variety of breeds of dogs which were used for herding cattle and horses or, simply, for man's best friend.
