In Massachusetts, the first public school system in the American colonies was established in 1647 with the passage of the Old Deluder Satan Act. This law mandated that towns with 50 or more households appoint a teacher and that those with 100 or more households establish a grammar school. This focus on education reflected the Puritan belief in the importance of literacy for religious instruction and civic responsibility. Additionally, Harvard College, founded in 1636, was the first institution of higher education in the colonies.
