How did they get so many munchkins?

The term "Munchkins" refers to the small inhabitants of the fictional Land of Oz in L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." In the context of the 1939 film adaptation, a large number of Munchkin characters were portrayed by a group of little people, many of whom were members of the "Midgets of America" organization.
