There are several ways for water to generate electricity:
- Hydroelectric Power: Water from a high location or from behind a dam flows through a turbine to turn a generator
- Wave Power: The oscillations of waves lift and lower floats which turn generators
- Tidal Power: Tides flowing in and out of narrow estuaries turn turbines
- Thermal Power: Water is turned to steam by burning fuel or nuclear energy. The stream turns a turbine to turn generators
- Geothermal Power: Water turned to steam by the Earth's heat is directed through steam turbines to turn generators
- Solar Power: Sunlight is turned to electricity by solar panels. The electricity is used to turn water to hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is collected as a fuel for fuel cells.
