World War II was at its height in 1944. The war had greatly stimulated the economy. Millions of people were needed to serve their country in the armed forces. That left a vacuum in the civilian labor force, meaning that there were many opportunities for people to fill the civilian jobs that servicemen had been doing before being deployed overseas. Many civilians were also needed to work in the factories that supplied the military with armaments and other goods.
