Before 1966 there were several different kinds of paper money in circulation. In addition to Federal Reserve Notes there were silver certificates and U.S. Notes. Once silver was withdrawn from coins there was no need for silver certificates, and U.S. Notes were essentially the same as FRNs so they too were suspended.
