When hosting an adult birthday party is it proper for the person to open gifts at the party or should they be taken home and opened later?

* Many guests would like to see the birthday person open their gifts, but, it's not always necessary. Unless it's done at the time the birthday cake is introduced the party may get into high gear and less people will be paying attention. In other Words, make the announcement earlier in the evening regarding the birthday cake then open gifts right after. If this is not possible then send the gifts home with the birthday person.
