Information is stored on a credit card in binary form (1's and 0's) encoded and stored as magnetic bits. (using positive polarity and negative polarity) The information is read by a system very similar to the old school tape reader heads like those used by audio and video cassettes. Newer cards use RFID chips, which emit the card information using a low-power RF emitter (similar to bluetooth).
