World first machine gun

The Gatling guns of the late 19th century, although it was hand-cranked. The first automatic machine gun was the Maxim Gun, in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The first submachine gun (handheld) was the 1896 Mauser schnellfeurer Construktion 96 (aka Mauser C96).
