How is basal cell carcinoma caused?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is primarily caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. This exposure damages the DNA in skin cells, leading to mutations that promote uncontrolled cell growth. Other factors, such as a history of skin damage, a weakened immune system, and genetic predisposition, can also increase the risk of developing BCC.
