The Muscogee (Creek) tribe traditionally sheltered in structures known as "chickees." These are raised, open-sided houses with thatched roofs made from palmetto leaves or grass, designed to provide ventilation and protection from the elements. Chickees were typically built on stilts to avoid flooding and to keep inhabitants cooler in the hot, humid climate of the southeastern United States. In colder months, the Muscogee also utilized more enclosed structures for added warmth.
