During the 400 years between the books of Malachi and Matthew, known as the intertestamental period, several significant events occurred. These include the rise of the Greek Empire under Alexander the great, the division of his empire into four kingdoms, the Maccabean Revolt in Judea, and the eventual rule of the Roman Empire over the region. This period also saw the development of various Jewish sects, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek (the Septuagint).
