What is the reason behind not wearing white after Labor Day?

It is a cultural tradition, which like all fashion statements has little practical value.
White is often worn in summer as light coloured cloth stays cooler in warm weather than darker coloured cloth. Unfortunately any dirt shows up quite visibly on white cloth. However after labour day you are getting into cooler Autumn weather, and therefore you want to wear darker colours.
