Yes, a person can give a symbol that reflects all, most, or part of their personality. for example; I use the "live long and prosper" symbol from Star Trek to show that I am eager to learn and very strict when it comes time to be serious. So find something you really think is neat, think of what it represents and if it represents you use it.
