What is the importance of need assessment in organization?

Often called the Business Case, it is a document that provides justification for undertaking activities within an organisation and evaluating the benefits, costs and risks of alternatives options together with all assumptions, and a recommendation for the preferred solution. The whole purpose of identifying the need is to capture it in a document that can be scrutinised in order to obtain management buy-in, commitment and approval for investment in order to undertake the activity. Every business need needs to be owned by the sponsor, who ultimately has responsibility for defining and realising the benefits contained in the need assessment/business case.
