Why was Rama exiled from his kingdom in the epic Ramayana?

Rama was exiled from his kingdom in the epic Ramayana because his stepmother, Kaikeyi, demanded that her son, Bharata, be crowned king instead of Rama. Rama's father, King Dasharatha, had to honor Kaikeyi's wishes due to a promise he had made to her long ago.
