How does the space shuttle fly into space?

The Space Shuttle flies into space using a combination of its powerful solid rocket boosters and its main engines. Upon liftoff, the solid rocket boosters provide the majority of the thrust needed to overcome Earth's gravity. Once the shuttle reaches a certain altitude and velocity, the boosters are jettisoned, and the main engines continue to propel the shuttle into orbit.
