The Mule deer population in the west has been declining for the pst few decades, and is declining because of:
Predators:
There have been a LOT of preadators preying on deer, and the Forest Service is trying to manage the predators more sufficiently.
Habitat Loss:
The whole stop-burning-the-forests thing has been really hurting the Mule deers' habitat, and has allowed dead trees to over-crowd forests. Then, when a fire does burn down forests full of dead trees, and fire fuel, the fires is more devistating, and burns hotter, causing lots of damage to the deer and their food source.
These are only a few things contributing to the curent deer decline. If you want to learn more, go to the related link.
