Why did some carpetbeggers come to the south?

Carpetbaggers, primarily Northern Republicans, moved to the South after the Civil War to take advantage of the region's economic and political turmoil during Reconstruction. They sought to promote economic development, implement reforms, and capitalize on the opportunities created by the South's devastated infrastructure. Additionally, some were motivated by a genuine desire to help formerly enslaved people gain rights and improve their conditions.
