Southern gentlemen liked to adopt codes of chivalry, partly because of their ancestral links with the Cavaliers of the English Civil War (with the North easily recognisable as the opposing Puritans.)

Mark Twain believed that these romantic mannerisms were also copied from the immensely popular novels of Sir Walter Scott.
