What happens to Bella's father in twilight?

Bella Swan's dad is Charlie Swan. He is a police officer in Forks and always trying to protect his daughter and the town the best that he can. He struggles with his acceptance of Edward because he blames him for Bella getting hurt, especially when she goes into a deep depression after Edward leaves in an attempt to protect her. His character is played by Billy Burke in the films.
