President Andrew Johnson's administration negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867. This deal, often referred to as "Seward's Folly" after Secretary of State William H. Seward, amounted to about two cents per acre for the territory. The acquisition was initially met with skepticism, but it later proved beneficial as Alaska was rich in Natural Resources.
