What is a hyperbole for spending a long time doing something you do not like?

My parents' idea of a fun summer vacation was "roughing it" in the woods: no electricity, no indoor Plumbing... I could hear the jailer's keys jangle as the iron bars slammed closed and his footsteps echoed as he chuckled down the hall.
