Development from egg to adult can take just a week. And fruit flies lay hundreds of eggs. So the moisture and the organic matter, for egg laying and larval feeding, must go. [1] So check for, and seal, all entry points through cracks and holes in screens. [2] Clean all drains and especially garbage disposals every 1-3 months. [3] Clean all spills, especially of fermented and sweet drinks such as liquor, soda, syrup, and vinegar. [4] Cover all food that isn't refrigerated. [5] Dry and cover all empty, rinsed out bottles, cans and containers. [6] Keep all cleaning supplies, such as mops and rags, as dry as possible. [7] Keep whatever doesn't have to be at room temperature, covered and in the 'fridge. [8] Make sure of the proper fit of all doors and Windows. [9] Monitor fruit and vegetables for ripening/rotting. [10] Pick up all crumbs and food remains. [11] Put all garbage in tightly sealed bags and tight-lidded containers. [12] Set up sticky paper traps. [13] Swat.
