Remove valve covers. Remove bolts from rocker arm assembly; remove each assembly carefully or tie them up with wire with enough room to ensure you can access push rods/lifters. Remove lift rods ensuring you keep them in order for replacement (now would also be the time to measure them and roll them on a piece of glass to ensure none are bent). Take a telescopic magneput (sears or harbor freight) and reach down and pull each lifter out; this might take a few tries as wear can make them stick a bit (so get a strong telescopic magnet the first time).
Removing the lifters is easier than replacing them, but I have a method for that as well. If you can find a small flashlight just large enough to lodge into one of the nearby pushrod openings, you can light up the area in the valley a bit, and this makes things easier. Put assembly lube on each lifter and lower in place carefully. If you have a brass brazing rod, you can carefully hold the lifter down to pull the magnet off, completing the process. If you mess up and one drops into the valley, don't worry--it probably hasn't gone far. Fish around for it a bit and fish it out and try again. Once all lifters are in place, replace pushrods, rocker arms (make sure all rods are positioned in each rocker before tightening and torquing bolts. Put
the valve covers back on.
You might want to disconnect the coil and gas line (plug it temporarily) and crank the engine over for a minute. Reconnect coil and gas line and fire up. Clatter may still occur as lifters "pump up" but this should disappear shortly. Operation done.
