The pitching distance in softball varies in different age divisions, associations, leagues, and style of softball. The rules book for the association under which the game is being played should be the ultimate place anyone should look to be sure the field layout is correct.
Generally, these are the distances for each age division
Fastpitch
U10- 35 feet (LL Minors)
U12/U14/U16- 40 feet (LL Majors)
U18- 40 feet or 43 feet if a college player is on the team
Majors- 43 feet (LL Juniors and up)
While generally currently well aligned you need to determine the Association NSA, USSSA, ASA or Little League and the level as they do from time to time vary. Some associations actually allow some discretion at lower levels as I understand which sounds weird. (Not seen it here but the web seems to support with various tournaments posting 'which' distance they will use.
In the context above majors is USSSA majors (older) NOT LL majors who are 12 year olds and work at 40 feet. All measurements are front of pitchers plate (closest to plate) to 'point of plate' (furthest back point).
