What happens to material when heated do they expand contract change color double the size?

Most materials expand when heated. A few contract under certain circumstances, for instance water contracts when heated between 1 and 4 degrees C. Some change colour, e.g. zinc oxide.

Whether they could double in size depends on the material and the temperature increase.
