What does tone mean in a work of literature?

Tone is the author's attitude toward the reader and the subject. It is expressed in the Words the author chooses and the way he or she writes. An author can have almost any attitude or tone. You can find formal or informal writing, humorous or serious writing, and even condescending writing.
